The Società Italiana di Igiene, Medicina Preventiva e Sanità Pubblica (SItI) believes that prevention of infectious diseases is one of the main objectives for Public Health professionals. Vaccinations are an exceptional discovery that changed the face of the history of medicine. Thanks to the use of vaccines in medical practice it has been eradicated smallpox, they have almost disappeared tetanus, polio, diphtheria and have been significantly reduced viral diseases such as hepatitis B, measles, rubella, mumps and diseases as bacterial meningitis.
Paradoxically vaccinations are “victims of their success”: not the diseases that have been eradicated or significantly reduced by being more visible decreased the perception of the importance of vaccinations, and are amplified by the web alarming and disturbing messages on the use of vaccines and it is spread news without scientific basis.
SITI is working to ensure correct and factual vaccination information and evidence is provided and in turn improve the uptake rates of adult vaccination.
