The Aging Institute of the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana has over 20 years of experience as a researcher in social and clinical problems of the elderly in Colombia and other countries in Latin America. Since 1994, an interdisciplinary team based at the San Ignacio University Hospital of the Universidad Javeriana has conducted research on these important issues. In 2000, the Aging Institute was created to provide research programs on social phenomena. In 2009, the postgraduate program in geriatric medicine was inaugurated. At present, more than 24 geriatricians in training, including nine geriatrics professors, psychiatrists, neurologists, neuropsychologists, psychologists and post-doctoral students, are working under Dr. Carlos Canos Gutierrez to investigate normal and pathological clinical and translational aging. In addition, the Institute is a national consultant in public policy related to aging. The Institute’s mission is research, with a focus on the social problems of the country’s elderly, and the Institute serves as the main centre of reference in Colombia.
