Mobilizing evidence to support a life course approach within NITAGs
In response to global agendas such as the WHO Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) and the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing, there is growing momentum to align policies that promote health and well-being across all stages of life. In this context, National Immunization Technical Advisory Groups (NITAGs) play a central role in shaping priorities and informing policies for the prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs), with National Immunization Plans (NIPs) largely based on their recommendations.
Building on the 2023 IFA-led review of NITAGs across 34 countries, this updated study takes a qualitative approach to examine how life course immunization is being considered and integrated. Through key informant interviews with stakeholders—including current and former NITAG members and subject matter experts—this study explores the current status, challenges, and opportunities for embedding a life course approach. Interviews identified several systemic barriers, as well as promising opportunities, to better prioritize and advance life course vaccination within national decision-making processes.
