Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias In Zambia

Immunization is an integral aspect in our day to day activities in our organization and as such we take issues of immunization earnestly as we believe immunosenescence, also known as age-related decline in immunity, significantly contributes to the susceptibility of older adults, vaccine-preventable conditions, including influenza, pneumonia and shingles. Patients often believe that by living a healthy lifestyle, they can avoid illnesses and diseases. While exercising, getting recommended screenings and eating right are important for staying healthy; they alone do not prevent older adults from acquiring vaccine-preventable diseases.A common factor that increases susceptibility to many illnesses, regardless of health status,is age. Vaccination is an effective tool to address this biological inevitability. Immune function wanes in all adults–adults whether healthy or sick–as they age into their fifth decade and beyond. Their bodies become less adept at recognizing and stopping pathogens and ability to develop and maintain immunity declines. For adults who feel and generally are healthy, it can be difficult to accept and/or recognize that these processes are occurring and the significance of these changes.

This is an important consideration when counselling older adults about the need for vaccination. Vaccines mimic a natural infection and trigger an immune reaction that teaches the body to recognize and fend off future infections of the same type. They build immunity against new infections and they can sometimes boost protection later in life to thwart the effects of waning immunity. Vaccines are an effective way of stimulating and heightening immune responses and boosting waning immunity in older adults. Yet adult vaccines remain significantly under utilized. With a growing portion of the population in Zambia living into their 80s,90s understanding the ageing immune system is becoming increasingly important for today’s healthcare professional, hence our well-intentioned determination to join and participate in the Vaccines4Life network.

It is in light of the above context that Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias In Zambia -ADDIZ makes a clarion call to Vaccines4life to share and exchange as much information and knowledge on immunization and vaccination because many underlying conditions that affect older people require vaccines to cure. As an aged-related organization Vaccines4life aligns very well with our mandate.

Coalition for Life-Course Immunisation

The Coalition for Life-Course Immunisation (CLCI) was established because a diverse network of expert members and associations from across Europe came together in early 2017 and, guided by the WHO’s European Vaccine Action Plan, concluded that life-course immunisation is one of the most effective public health tools to eradicate vaccine-preventable infectious diseases. CLCI is committed to prevention of these diseases over the life-course through the promotion of the health and economic benefits of wide-scale immunisation.

CLCI will address issues and barriers that prevent the widespread implementation of life-course immunisation, along with promoting awareness among policy makers and politicians, health professionals and the public of the importance of vaccination programmes for European citizens of all ages. CLCI commits to working with the relevant institutions at European Union and Member State level, as well as other external stakeholders and collaborators in order to achieve its aims.

Diabetes Frail Ltd

Diabetes Frail Ltd (www.diabetesfrail.org) and its associated Foundation for Diabetes Research in Older People) is a not-for-profit medical research organisation dedicated to learning more about frailty and its linkage with diabetes in older people. We are the primary and leading site in Europe for studies in this emerging field. Professor Alan Sinclair is Founder and Director, and has launched the Diabetes Frail project to further explore the emerging importance of frailty as a better-defined concept in ageing populations and its association with diabetes. Diabetes and frailty may be causally related and operate through each of the key components of the frailty phenotype or via the associated medical co-morbidities. Diabetes Frail undertakes European Union-funded research including the recent FP7-funded MIDFRAIL study which is the first large scale RCT to demonstrate that exercise combined with nutritional education and medical optimisation can lead to improvements in function in older frail patients with type 2 diabetes.

Dutch Influenza Foundation

The Dutch Influenza Foundation (Nederlandse Influenza Stichting, NIS) aims to contribute to the prevention and reduction of influenza-associated disease. It advocates implementation of evidence-based national recommendations for immunization with the flu shot by engaging stakeholders, risk groups, researchers and through (social) media communication.

In the late nineties, the NIS abrogated itself after contributing to the successful increase of the Dutch flu vaccination coverage rate. Perhaps a bit too soon – considering that vaccination coverage rates started dropping in the late zeros. In May 2018, the Dutch senior citizen association (KBO-PCOB) rang the alarm bells. They noticed an increasing flu disease burden among their members. KBO-PCOB requested the government and society to come up with an “action plan on winter mortality”. And that’s why and when it was decided to re-establish the NIS.

Objectives:
1. (Co-)organize a stakeholder consultation of parties involved in flu vaccination
2. (Co-)organize a national flu shot day, to mark the launch of a national vaccination campaign with a national flu shot day.
3. Launching a Dutch version of the Influenza Hub.
4. Stimulate vaccination among Health Care Workers.

EASYCare Health

Easy Care LogoEASYCare Health strongly supports the campaign to increase vaccination uptake in old age to help promote healthy ageing. EASYCare Health is a Social Enterprise Company whose mission is to improve the lives of older people throughout the world by using standardised methods to identify the concerns of older people about their health, independence and well-being, and mobilize support based on the priorities of the older person and their families.

With 25 years of development, experience of use in 44 poor, middle income and rich countries, and with more than 80- peer-reviewed publications about the validity and effectiveness of the approach, we know that low rates of vaccine uptake is one of the key threats to health, independence and well-being in old age. That is why we include routine enquiry about vaccination uptake in our assessment methods and encourage older people to make sure they are up to date with their vaccines.

EasyCare will be working with the World Coalition on Adult Vaccination to develop our assessment methods, guidance and training systems so that we can highlight this issue with people involved in front-line care for older people and provide data about the extent to which older people regard this as a concern for their health and care.

Influenza Hub

Influenza Hub uses modern communication channels to raise awareness of what the flu is, how to prevent it, what the possible complications are and who is most at risk. Recognising a fundamental misunderstanding about influenza and the difference between a cold and the flu, and a lack of knowledge about potential complications for high-risk groups, we set out to help people learn about flu prevention. Today we proactively reach out on social media and our blog to provide targeted information to high-risk groups. People at risk of flu can use our platform themselves to discuss infection, health and the role of flu prevention. Our advisory board members include IFPMA, Mylan, WMA, Sanofi Pasteur and Seqirus. IFA and VaccinesToday also support the initiative.

Società Italiana di Igiene

SITI LogoThe Società Italiana di Igiene, Medicina Preventiva e Sanità Pubblica (SItI) believes that prevention of infectious diseases is one of the main objectives for Public Health professionals. Vaccinations are an exceptional discovery that changed the face of the history of medicine. Thanks to the use of vaccines in medical practice it has been eradicated smallpox, they have almost disappeared tetanus, polio, diphtheria and have been significantly reduced viral diseases such as hepatitis B, measles, rubella, mumps and diseases as bacterial meningitis.

Paradoxically vaccinations are “victims of their success”: not the diseases that have been eradicated or significantly reduced by being more visible decreased the perception of the importance of vaccinations, and are amplified by the web alarming and disturbing messages on the use of vaccines and it is spread news without scientific basis.

SITI is working to ensure correct and factual vaccination information and evidence is provided and in turn improve the uptake rates of adult vaccination.

U

UNIDAD DE PREVENCION INTERNATIONAL

The UNIDAD DE PREVENCION INTERNATIONAL, UPV was originally conceived as a traveler’s clinic in 1994, but later dedicated mostly towards the concept of adult vaccination. From the beginning it was obvious the lack of knowledge about adult vaccination and interest on this matter. Personal in training and more striking, admittedly well-trained colleagues who served on different specialties and subspecialties at a tertiary care hospital where I practice were barely aware on existing vaccines for adult and the elderly population. At UPV we perceive vaccination as another act in medicine, another procedure, and certainly we believe it should be a state of mind and fully aligned with the mission of any health institution, whereas dedicated to diagnostics, therapeutics or preventative services, whether it is a small health unit serving a small community, a medical office or a major hospital dedicated to various fields in medicine.

Vaccine Confidence Project™

The Vaccine Confidence Project™ was founded in 2009 to monitor public confidence in immunisation programmes by building an information surveillance system for early detection of public concerns around vaccines; by applying a diagnostic tool to data collected to determine the risk level of public concerns in terms of their potential to disrupt vaccine programmes; and, finally, to provide analysis and guidance for early response and engagement with the public to ensure sustained confidence in vaccines and immunisation. This initiative also defines a Vaccine Confidence Index™ (VCI) as a tool for mapping confidence globally. Despite the historic success of immunisation in reducing the burden of childhood illness and death, episodes of public concerns and rumours around vaccines have occurred around the world, spreading quickly and sometimes seriously eroding public confidence in immunisation and ultimately leading to vaccine refusals and disease outbreaks. This project seeks to monitor public confidence in immunisation programs by listening for early signals of public distrust and questioning and providing risk analysis and guidance to engage the public early to pre-empt potential programme disruptions.
